Dr. Karen C. Tillman
Licensed Clinical Psychologist

My philosophy:

Psychotherapy can be a highly effective tool for resolving any number of concerns, but the most precious gift which therapy can give is the development of inner resources which can be relied upon for a lifetime.

My approach:

My goal is to work with you in order to fully identify and understand your concerns. Once this is accomplished, we will continue to work together to determine the course of treatment which appears most appropriate for you. We will discuss various therapeutic approaches (e.g. cognitive-behavioral vs. psychodynamic) and decide on the approach (or combination of approaches) that both you and I feel will help you best to resolve your concerns. We will also set treatment goals and regularly assess our progress.

I see the following clients:

-Children
-Adolescents
-Adults
-Families
-Couples

FAQ

Here are some questions that are frequently asked by individuals who are contemplating therapy:

What will the sessions be like?

In my practice, and in most others, client and therapist sit in comfortable chairs and discuss issues face to face. It is normal to feel nervous during the initial sessions, but as we get to know each other better those feelings usually go away. During our first few sessions you and I will determine the areas that you want to work on and how we will approach those problems. This is achieved through discussions about your strengths and resources and an examination of the thoughts, feelings and behavior patterns which hold you back from achieving your goals.

How often will we meet?

Session frequency will be determined according to your specific concerns and circumstances. Most clients have weekly therapy sessions but others meet once every two weeks or monthly.

How long are sessions?

Counseling sessions last approximately 45 to 50 minutes.

How long will I be in treatment?

The length of treatment is quite variable. During our initial session(s), when we determine the best ways to approach your concerns, we will also determine an expected length of treatment. Many individuals meet their goals within 5 to 15 sessions, while others remain in therapy longer in order to work on more complicated issues or because they are using therapy as part of an ongoing growth process. Some clients who feel satisfied with the work they have done in therapy keep bi-monthly appoints in order to consolidate the gains they have made. Don't forget that you always have the option of ending therapy whenever you would like.

Is what I tell my therapist kept confidential?

Yes. Keeping what we discuss confidential is of the utmost importance to me. Not only is the information that you tell me confidential, but the fact that you are in therapy at all is also confidential. Your privacy is protected by Colorado state law and by the ethical principles of the American Psychological Association. During our first meeting we will review your right to privacy and the legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality.

Are you a licensed psychologist? What does "licensed psychologist" mean?

Yes, I am a licensed psychologist. In order to become a licensed psychologist in Colorado, the following criteria must be met:

1) graduation from a doctoral program in psychology

2) 1500 hours of postdoctoral experience and supervision

3) passing score on the Examination for the Practice of Psychology

4) passing score on the Colorado Mental Health Jurisprudence Examination.

Most therapists are not psychologists and do not have the depth or breadth of training that psychologists receive.

Do you take insurance?

I will work with your insurance as an out-of-network provider. It is a simple process and I will assist you with it throughout treatment. First, we would contact your insurance company and inquire about your mental health "out-of-network benefits". Generally, insurance companies can reimburse anywhere from 50% to 80% depending on your plan and deductible. You would then pay my fee at the time of our session and I would provide you receipts that you could submit directly to your insurance company for reimbursement.

What are your office hours?

I see clients during the week and also hold some early morning and evening hours. In addition, I occasionally see clients on the weekends.

Is your voice mail confidential?

Yes. I am the only person who has access to my voice mail. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions, would like to discuss any of the above issues in
more detail, or if you would like to set up an appointment.
